Migraines

Migraines are more than just headaches and involve several severe symptoms, including:

  • Pain on one side of the head
  • Pain in the back of the head
  • Sensitive to light
  • Visual disturbances
  • Nausea and vomitting
  • Loss of concentration
  • Lethargy

Often the only treatment for a migraine is a dark room and sleep. Often over the counter medications such as paracetamol and ibuprofen don't work. Prescription medication such as triptans and anti-emetics are given to migraine sufferers.

Causes of migraines

The causes of migraines from a Chinese point of view differ to those of western medicine and include:

  • Tiredness
  • Stress
  • Menstrual cycle
  • Exposure to climatic conditions, i.e. cold wind

Acupuncture for migraines

Acupuncture can treat a wide range of pain disorders including migraines. Research has shown that acupuncture can relieve migraines and reduce their frequency.
