Somatic Coaching in Wokingham

What is somatic coaching?

Soma is the Greek word for ‘what it means to be in the body’. What it feels like to be in our body and our experience of ourselves from the inside. Somatic movement understands that each person’s experience is uniquely different.

Somatic coaching is a neurological workout. By re-trainings the brain and its connection to the muscles which have become ‘stuck’ in a pattern of contraction and forgotten how to relax. This is called SMA, (Sensory Motor Amnesia).

Why you need Somatic coaching

Over time, when your body gets used to staying in a pattern, for example sat at desk all day, your core muscles learn to become permanently contracted. Previously it was thought that the core needed strengthening. It has now been discovered that in fact it actually because your muscles are permanently contracting and become weak as a result of over use.

Sensory motor amnesia occurs when the brain is constantly sending a message to your muscles to keep them in contraction or protection mode. Hence the word amnesia, your brain has forgotten to send the message ‘relax’ to the muscles. Private sessions are a great way to deepen and develop your practice further, they enable you to understand and build a greater self-awareness going at your own pace.

If you are a complete beginner wishing to start Yoga or have an existing practice, we can create a session for you. For anyone with old injuries, pain and stiffness in the body then a Somatic movement session is highly recommended. If you would like to get together on a one-to-one basis, we can discuss what it is that you would like to gain from the session and then devise a tailored session for you.

Francesca Melluzzi

I’m a Somatic coach, Yoga instructor and an Holistic therapist with over 15 years’ experience working intuitively with people encouraging self-awareness of the body and mind through movement, meditation and breath work.

In 2003 I went to train in India with the Sivananda Vedanta centre. It was a pivotal point in my life and took me into places within myself that I never knew existed. I came back inspired to live in a way that would embody this peace.

Since then I have trained to become a level 2 Somatic movement coach and specialise in private one-on-one sessions. After working with bodies for so many years I was delighted when I discovered Hanna Somatic movement. I firmly believe that Somatic movement offers long term solutions to pain and stiffness. Although massage and stretching are wonderful and feel great to the body as a healing treatment in their own right, they cannot on their own address the root issue which is the brain and its connection to the muscles.
