1. About Thai massage
Thai massage, also known as Nuad Thai (นวดไทย), is a traditional healing practice that originated in Thailand over 2,500 years ago. It combines elements of acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles and assisted yoga postures to restore balance to the body's energy pathways, known as sen lines – similar to meridians in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Unlike most Western massage styles, Thai massage is performed fully clothed on a floor mat and uses no oils. The therapist guides the body through a sequence of stretches and applies rhythmic pressure along the sen lines, making it a deeply therapeutic treatment for both body and mind.
2. History
Thai massage is said to have been founded over 2,500 years ago by Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, a physician to the Buddha. Dr Jivaka was renowned for his expertise in traditional Indian medicine (including Ayurveda) and was also skilled in meditation and Asana. He is widely referred to as the "Father of Medicine".
Thai yoga massage became an integral part of Buddhist tradition and gradually spread to the Thai people. Following the Thai Massage Revival Project in 1985, the practice gained recognition in the West, where it is now widely practised as both a therapeutic and relaxation treatment.
3. Benefits of Thai massage
Thai massage offers a broad range of physical and mental health benefits, supported by clinical research:
- Deep relaxation
Stretching techniques combined with gentle rhythmic pressure help to relax the whole body and calm the mind, making Thai massage one of the most deeply restorative treatments available. - Improved cardiovascular health
Thai massage has been shown to stimulate blood and lymph circulation, helping to oxygenate the body's tissues and promote healthy cell growth and heart health. - Stress relief
A study found that Thai massage significantly reduces levels of a salivary stress marker (sAA), concluding it is more effective at reducing stress in healthy people than rest alone. - Improved sleep quality
By lowering stress and boosting relaxation, Thai massage aids restful sleep. Research from the US National Institutes of Health found it can reduce fatigue and improve overall sleep quality. - Headache and migraine relief
Research has found Thai massage to be an effective treatment for chronic tension headaches. A separate study found it can also ease migraine symptoms. - Reduced muscle tension
The yoga-like movements used in Thai massage have been proven to ease tension throughout the body and, over time, improve range of motion and flexibility. - Enhanced athletic performance
