Body Psychotherapy & Biodynamic Massage in Wokingham, Berkshire
Body psychotherapy and biodynamic massage are somatic therapies that work with the whole person – body, nervous system and emotions – to release stress, trauma and long-held tension. At Wokingham Therapy Clinic, both are offered by Ingrid Wienholts of Wild Rose Body Psychotherapy, a UKCP trainee psychotherapist and qualified biodynamic massage therapist trained at the London School of Biodynamic Psychotherapy (LSBP).
These therapies are particularly helpful if you have been living with long-term stress, burnout, trauma, anxiety or physical tension that has not responded to talking therapy or conventional massage alone.

1. What is body psychotherapy?
Body psychotherapy combines gentle conversation with physical awareness to safely process and release deeply held emotional stress or trauma. Unlike purely talk-based approaches, it recognises that the body carries memory, emotion and habitual patterns of tension – and that lasting change often needs to happen at both the mental and physical level.
When we experience difficult life events, sudden loss, prolonged stress or trauma, the body's protective response can stay switched on long after the event itself has passed. Over time this shows up as exhaustion, a racing heart, sleep disturbance, digestive issues, or chronic tightness in the back, shoulders and jaw. Body psychotherapy helps the nervous system move out of constant fight-or-flight, so the body can settle and healing can begin.
2. What is biodynamic massage?
Biodynamic massage uses targeted, therapeutic touch to directly dissolve what biodynamic psychotherapists call ‘muscular armouring’ – the layers of chronic tension the body builds up over years of holding stress. Working with the tissue, the fascia and the digestive system, biodynamic massage helps release metabolic stress and brings a deeply restorative relaxation to the body.
Unlike sports or deep-tissue massage, biodynamic massage is not primarily about breaking down knots. It is a slower, more attuned form of touch that helps the nervous system regulate itself. Clients often report a profound sense of calm, groundedness and warmth that lasts well beyond the session.
Biodynamic massage can be booked as a standalone treatment or combined with body psychotherapy as part of a fuller programme.
3. Who these therapies help
Body psychotherapy and biodynamic massage may be a good fit if you are experiencing:
- Long-term stress, burnout or exhaustion
- Anxiety, panic or a persistent sense of unease
- Trauma responses, PTSD or complex trauma
- Emotional difficulties that talk therapy alone has not resolved
- Difficulty relaxing, poor sleep, or a nervous system that feels “stuck on”
- Chronic muscular tension in the back, shoulders, neck or jaw
- Grief, loss or major life transitions
- A sense of disconnection from your body or from your emotions
- A wish to feel more grounded, embodied and comfortable in your own skin
4. What to expect at your appointment
Your first session is a chance to talk about what has brought you and what you would like to focus on. Ingrid works collaboratively and at your pace – there is no expectation to bring or share anything you are not ready to. Sessions typically last around an hour, with a mixture of conversation, awareness practices and (where appropriate and welcomed) hands-on biodynamic massage.
All work is guided by consent. You remain in charge of what happens in the room at every stage. Ingrid’s aim is not to “fix” you, but to help you listen to what your body carries with curiosity, compassion and patience – so you can feel genuinely relaxed, grounded and at home in yourself again.
5. Frequently asked questions
How is body psychotherapy different from counselling or CBT?
Counselling and CBT work primarily through conversation and thought patterns. Body psychotherapy also includes the body – how you breathe, hold tension, and experience emotion physically. This is particularly helpful when the difficulty you are working with is stored as a body response (chronic anxiety, trauma, exhaustion) as much as a thought or feeling.
Do I have to be undressed for biodynamic massage?
No. Biodynamic massage can be given fully clothed or with the client undressed to the underwear (as with a typical massage), always covered by a towel or blanket. Your comfort and consent guide every choice.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies enormously. Some clients come for a small number of sessions to address a specific stressful period; others work over months or years for deeper trauma or long-standing patterns. You and Ingrid will review progress regularly and there is no obligation to commit long-term.
Is body psychotherapy safe if I have a history of trauma?
Yes – it is specifically designed to work safely with trauma. Ingrid is trained to work at a pace your nervous system can tolerate, using grounding and consent-based practices throughout. Nothing intrusive happens without your explicit agreement.
Can I have body psychotherapy alongside other therapy?
Yes. Many clients combine body psychotherapy with counselling, CBT or medical care. Ingrid is happy to liaise with other professionals involved in your care if you would like her to.
