Conditions we treat
Our practitioners have experience treating a wide range of women's health conditions, including:
Menopause
The menopause is a natural transition that typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, marked by the end of menstruation and a significant shift in hormone levels. Symptoms can include hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, mood changes, fatigue, brain fog, joint pain and vaginal dryness. Acupuncture, nutritional therapy, hypnotherapy and counselling can all help manage menopausal symptoms and support wellbeing during this transition.
Perimenopause
The perimenopause is the transitional period leading up to the menopause, during which oestrogen and progesterone levels begin to fluctuate. It can begin several years before periods stop and symptoms can be wide-ranging and unpredictable. Many women find that complementary therapies provide effective relief from perimenopausal symptoms, either alongside or as an alternative to HRT.
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
PMS affects up to 75% of women during their reproductive years, causing physical and emotional symptoms in the days before a period, including bloating, breast tenderness, mood swings, irritability, low energy and difficulty concentrating. Acupuncture, nutritional therapy and reflexology can help regulate hormonal balance and reduce the severity of PMS symptoms over time.
Irregular or painful periods
Irregular cycles, heavy bleeding and painful periods (dysmenorrhoea) are common but not something you should simply endure. These symptoms are often linked to hormonal imbalances, endometriosis, fibroids or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have a strong tradition of regulating menstrual cycles and reducing menstrual pain.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is a hormonal condition affecting around one in ten women of reproductive age, characterised by irregular periods, elevated androgens, insulin resistance and polycystic ovaries on ultrasound. It is a significant cause of subfertility and is associated with long-term metabolic health risks. Nutritional therapy, acupuncture and lifestyle intervention can help regulate cycles, improve insulin sensitivity and support fertility in women with PCOS.
Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing pain, inflammation, heavy periods and fertility problems. While medical and surgical management is often necessary, complementary therapies including acupuncture and nutritional therapy can help reduce pain, manage inflammation and improve quality of life alongside conventional treatment.
Hormonal imbalances
Hormonal imbalances can cause a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, weight changes, mood disturbance, skin problems, hair loss and digestive issues. Nutritional therapy can investigate underlying causes through functional testing and provide targeted support to restore hormonal balance through diet, supplements and lifestyle change.
Therapies for women's health
Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to support women's health, and there is now a growing body of research supporting its use for menopause, PMS, painful periods, PCOS, fertility and pregnancy. It works by regulating the neuroendocrine system, improving blood flow to the reproductive organs and reducing the stress hormones that can disrupt hormonal balance. Many women find acupuncture deeply relaxing as well as therapeutically effective.
Reflexology
Reflexology is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that applies pressure to specific points on the feet, hands or ears that correspond to organs and systems throughout the body. It is particularly popular among women for hormonal health, menopause, fertility support and pregnancy. Many clients find it deeply relaxing and beneficial for stress-related symptoms.
Massage
Therapeutic massage can provide significant relief from the muscular tension, headaches, fatigue and stress that often accompany hormonal changes. Pregnancy massage is also available and is adapted to be safe and comfortable throughout all stages of pregnancy, helping to relieve back pain, swollen ankles and the physical demands of carrying a baby.
Nutritional therapy
Nutritional therapy takes a functional medicine approach to women's health, investigating the root causes of symptoms through detailed assessment and, where appropriate, laboratory testing. Areas of focus can include hormonal balance, thyroid function, adrenal health, gut health, weight management and nutritional deficiencies. A personalised plan including dietary changes and targeted supplementation is developed for each individual.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy can be effective for a range of women's health concerns, including menopausal hot flushes, anxiety, sleep problems, IBS and confidence issues. Research has shown that hypnotherapy can reduce the frequency and severity of hot flushes in menopausal women. It can also support fertility by addressing the anxiety and stress that often accompany fertility treatment.
Counselling
Women's health issues can carry a significant emotional and psychological burden. Counselling provides a safe, confidential space to explore and process feelings related to fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, body image, hormonal mood changes, the menopause transition or any other aspect of women's health. Our counsellors offer compassionate, non-judgmental support tailored to your individual needs.

Our approach
Women's health is complex and deeply personal. At Wokingham Therapy Clinic, we recognise that every woman's experience is unique and that effective care requires more than a one-size-fits-all approach. Our practitioners take a thorough history at your first appointment, listening carefully to your symptoms, concerns and goals before recommending treatment.
We work holistically, considering the interplay between physical health, hormonal balance, nutrition, stress and emotional wellbeing. Where a combination of therapies would be beneficial, we can coordinate care across our team. All of our practitioners are fully qualified and registered with their relevant professional bodies.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a GP referral?
No GP referral is needed to see any of our practitioners. You can self-refer directly by contacting us to book an appointment.
Can I have treatment during pregnancy?
Yes. Several of our therapies are safe and beneficial during pregnancy, including pregnancy massage, reflexology and acupuncture. Our practitioners have specific training in working with pregnant women and will adapt treatment appropriately. Please mention that you are pregnant when booking so that we can ensure the right therapist and approach.
Which therapy should I start with?
This depends on your symptoms and goals. Acupuncture and reflexology are versatile therapies that can support many aspects of women's health. If your concerns are primarily nutritional or hormonal, nutritional therapy may be the best starting point. For emotional or psychological support, counselling or hypnotherapy may be most appropriate. Please contact us and we will help guide you to the right practitioner.
Can complementary therapies be used alongside HRT or other medication?
Yes. Our therapies are safe to use alongside hormone replacement therapy (HRT), contraceptives and most other medications. They are designed to complement rather than replace conventional medical treatment. Your practitioner will always ask about current medications at your first appointment.
