At Wokingham Therapy Clinic we offer a range of therapists and practitioners to help you understand and overcome anxiety. Our clinic is based in a warm, Grade II listed Victorian cottage on Denmark Street in the heart of Wokingham, serving the surrounding communities of Crowthorne, Bracknell, Reading, Windsor and Ascot.

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health challenges in the UK, but with the right support it is very treatable. Our team takes a holistic, whole-person approach, offering both talking therapies and complementary treatments under one roof.

2. What is anxiety?

Anxiety is the body's natural response to perceived threat or danger. In short bursts, this response is helpful — it keeps us alert and focused. However, when anxiety becomes persistent, overwhelming or begins to interfere with daily life, it is a condition that deserves proper care and attention.

At its most difficult, anxiety can feel all-consuming. It can affect your relationships, your work, your sleep and your physical health. Many people struggle for months or years before seeking help. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone — and effective support is available in Wokingham.

3. Signs and symptoms of anxiety

Anxiety can manifest in many different ways. You may recognise some of the following:

  • Persistent feelings of worry, dread or unease
  • Racing or intrusive thoughts that are hard to control
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Sleep disturbances or insomnia
  • Heart palpitations or a rapid heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath or a tight feeling in the chest
  • Muscle tension, headaches or persistent fatigue
  • Avoiding people, places or situations that trigger anxiety
  • Irritability or a constant feeling of being on edge
  • Nausea, dizziness or digestive problems
  • Sweating, trembling or tingling sensations
  • Panic attacks

You do not need to experience all of these to be struggling with anxiety. If any of these symptoms feel familiar, speaking to one of our therapists is a good first step.

4. Types of anxiety we treat

Anxiety is not a single condition. Our therapists have experience working with a broad range of anxiety presentations, including:

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) — persistent, excessive worry about a wide range of everyday matters, often without a clear trigger. GAD can make it feel impossible to switch off or relax.

Social anxiety — a deep fear of social situations or of being judged or embarrassed by others, which can cause significant distress in the workplace, in relationships and in everyday interactions.

Panic disorder — repeated, unexpected panic attacks accompanied by intense physical symptoms, and a persistent fear of experiencing further episodes.

Health anxiety — excessive worry about having or developing a serious illness, often despite medical reassurance. Health anxiety can be consuming and exhausting.

Phobias — an intense, irrational fear of a specific object, situation or activity that leads to avoidance and significant distress.

Trauma-related anxiety — anxiety that follows or is linked to a traumatic experience, which may include flashbacks, hypervigilance, nightmares and emotional numbing.

If you are unsure which type of anxiety you are experiencing, that is absolutely fine. Our therapists will work with you to understand your experience fully. You do not need a diagnosis to reach out.

5. Treatments we offer in Wokingham

One of the great strengths of Wokingham Therapy Clinic is that we offer a genuine multidisciplinary approach under one roof. You can access both talking therapies and complementary treatments, allowing us to support your mind and body together.

Acupuncture — traditional Chinese acupuncture is used to calm the nervous system, reduce physical tension and promote a deeper sense of wellbeing.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) — a highly evidenced talking therapy that helps you identify and challenge the unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours that fuel anxiety.

Counselling and psychotherapy — a safe, confidential space to explore the roots of your anxiety with an experienced, non-judgemental therapist, at your own pace.

Hypnotherapy — hypnotherapy can help to quieten the anxious mind, address deep-seated fears and build calmer patterns of thinking and response.

Clinical psychology — specialist psychological assessment and evidence-based intervention for more complex or persistent anxiety presentations.

Somatic experiencing — a body-focused approach that works to release trauma and anxiety stored in the nervous system, particularly helpful for trauma-related anxiety.

Massage therapy — therapeutic massage can relieve the physical symptoms of anxiety, including muscle tension, headaches and disrupted sleep.

Nutritional therapy — explores the connection between diet, gut health and mental wellbeing, supporting your anxiety treatment from the inside out.

Your therapist will help you decide which approach, or combination of approaches, is most likely to help you.

6. Why a holistic approach to anxiety?

Anxiety is not just in your head — it is a whole-body experience. Many people find that addressing anxiety from multiple angles leads to greater and more lasting results than any single approach alone.

At Wokingham Therapy Clinic, our therapists come from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines. Some work in an integrative way, drawing on multiple modalities. Others specialise in specific evidence-based methods. What unites them is a commitment to working collaboratively with you, at your pace, in a space that feels genuinely safe and supportive.

We also work with a number of major private health insurance providers, so your treatment may be covered by your existing policy. Please see our prices page for further details.

7. Frequently asked questions

How do I know which treatment is right for me?
The best starting point is to contact one of our therapists directly — most offer a free initial telephone consultation. They will listen to what you are experiencing and help you decide whether their approach is a good fit. If you are unsure where to start, you can also contact the clinic and we will advise you.

How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on the person and the nature of their anxiety. Some people notice significant improvement within six to eight sessions; others benefit from longer-term work. Your therapist will discuss this with you and review your progress regularly.

Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can self-refer to any of our therapists directly. However, if you are already working with your GP or a psychiatrist, it can be helpful for your therapist to be aware of any existing treatment or medication.

Is everything I say kept confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of all therapeutic work at the clinic. Your therapist will explain the very limited circumstances in which this may need to be reconsidered, but in the vast majority of cases everything you share remains entirely private.

Can therapy make things feel worse before they get better?
It is not uncommon to feel a little more unsettled in the early stages of therapy, as you begin to explore difficult feelings. This is normal and temporary. Always raise any concerns with your therapist so they can support you through it.

Do you offer online or telephone sessions?
Several of our therapists offer remote sessions via video or telephone in addition to in-person appointments at the clinic. Please check with the individual therapist when making contact.

Attilio D'AlbertoI am a renowned expert in the field of acupuncture and Chinese medicine with over 25 years of clinical experience. I graduated from the world-renowned Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China after completing their five-year full time medical degree programme, which included six months clinical internship at two of the largest hospitals in Beijing. I also hold a BSc (Hons) in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Middlesex University in London and am a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC).

I practice traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, moxibustion and cupping therapy. In my treatments I use a blend of ancient Chinese medicine theory and modern western medicine to give a deep insight into illness and help the body to heal. Acupuncture can be particularly effective for anxiety as it works by calming the nervous system and regulating the body's natural responses to stress. I have extensive experience treating anxiety, depression, chronic pain, fertility, digestive problems, skin complaints and many other health problems.

I have published two books in three languages on the subject of fertility: My Fertility Guide - How to Get Pregnant Naturally and My Pregnancy Guide - Ensuring a Healthy Pregnancy and Labour. Michael Lipo

Michael LipoI am a registered member of the BACP (MBACP) and work with teenagers and adults on an individual basis. I have experience and training in working with depression, anxiety, stress, anger, relationship issues, self-esteem and confidence, life questions, personal development, self-harm and disordered eating.

I work with you to resolve any past experiences and to make sense of what you have witnessed or have been through. I also work in the present with you to resolve current problems. We can take a more thought focussed approach (problem solving, cognitive distortions, challenging beliefs) or emotion focussed (making sense of feelings, resolving hurt, working towards letting go of things that don’t serve you well any more). It’s likely that we’ll use both approaches to get you to where you want to be. My approach is adaptable and pulls from my integrated qualification and wide-ranging training which is useful in keeping up-to-date with current research, theories and approaches.

Heloise Liddell

Heloise LiddellI am an integrative, relational psychotherapist offering a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental space where you can feel heard and understood. I believe that everyone has the capacity for growth and meaningful change, and that therapy can support you in reconnecting with yourself and finding ways forward.

Whatever brings you to therapy, we can explore it together at your pace, in a space that feels safe, grounded and respectful. I am particularly interested in how past experiences, especially early relationships and losses, can shape how we see ourselves and relate to others. At times, these patterns can leave us feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure why we feel the way we do. Therapy offers an opportunity to explore these experiences with curiosity and compassion.

I have experience working across the NHS, low-cost counselling services, community organisations and a national mental health charity, and I work with a wide range of difficulties including anxiety, depression, bereavement, trauma, relationship issues and self-esteem. I hold a Master's degree in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy and am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

I offer a free introductory phone call. Please feel free to get in touch by email (heloise.liddell@yahoo.com) to find out more.

Deborah Thomas

Deborah ThomasI am a trainee Integrated Art Psychotherapist completing the final year of an MA in Integrative Art Psychotherapy for adults at the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education in London.

You may have tried talking therapies and not noticed any change in how you feel afterwards. Art psychotherapy offers everything that normal talking therapy offers with the added dimension of accessing the unconscious parts of you, in a safe and contained way.

I am passionate about working with people who feel lost, stuck, overwhelmed and in emotional pain. I offer a space in which you can safely explore your feelings, your fears and your dreams. I work with metaphor, images, art, sandtray, poetry, music, clay, puppets, and the body. Working in this way can bring insight, growth and healing. We can also just sit and talk without doing any art.

I have 3 years of experience working in the NHS and with a charity for victims of sexual abuse and rape, anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma and PTSD, relationship difficulties, domestic abuse, self esteem, stress and more.

Laura Luzanycia

Laura LuzanyciaI am a qualified Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist working with adults, young people and adolescents. I am a registered member of the BACP to ensure my practice is safe and ethical.

Seeking support during difficult times can be one of the hardest steps to take. I deeply value honesty in those who are wanting to face their challenges and work through them. Therapy offers a safe and non-judgmental space where you can freely explore your thoughts and feelings. With my support, we can work together to process what you're going through, and begin to reframe and repack those experiences in a way that allows meaningful change to happen for you.

Every individual and their self-concept is constructed in a unique way and my practice will be tailored to meet your needs. I work in a relational way which allows a deeper level of empathy to understand how you must be experiencing your distress. I bring focus to unconscious processes, patterns of thoughts and behaviours which can influence how you relate to yourself and the world around you.

These processes can derive from your childhood experiences or more recent events in your life. We work together to explore these at your pace, bring them forward to your awareness so that you can make decisions about how you can move forward with those experiences you may carry. This will then alleviate the distress, help you feel more grounded and connected with yourself, your inner world and relate more meaningfully with those around you.

You are welcome to visit my website www.lauraluzanyciacounselling.co.uk, which includes further details about my practice and how I might be able to support you, or contact me on 07854 904229 or via email on laura.luzanycia@outlook.com.

Ryan Selby

Ryan SelbyI am an integrative therapist which means I am not just limited to one approach when working, instead I choose several approaches depending on you and your situation. I am someone who can help create an environment where you can choose to talk about any topic you like as I am non-judgemental, caring and understanding. My previous experience with clients ranges from the ages of 11-55 in a variety of environments including charities, local councils and a prison, working with a range of different issues.

Starting therapy can be quite daunting, believe me I know! I was lucky enough to have counselling as a child through a charity due to a bereavement, and although I was reluctant at first, it helped more than I could have imagined. As an adult, I now have my own personal sessions as I believe it is a great way to help me reflect and process what goes on in my own life.

If I did not believe in counselling, I would not want to be a therapist. I feel so strongly that it can help people in a number of ways, making me incredibly passionate about my work. I am constantly keeping up to date with new techniques and research about counselling and mental health, to be the best that I can for you.

Please feel free to call, email or have a look at my website. I hope to hear from you soon! www.unwindyourmind.co.uk, counsellingwithryan@gmail.com, 07947 602473.
