Conditions we treat

Our therapists have experience treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including:

Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health conditions, affecting millions of people in the UK. It can take many forms, including generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, health anxiety and panic disorder. Symptoms include persistent worry, racing thoughts, physical tension, shortness of breath and avoidance behaviour. Effective treatments include CBT, counselling, clinical psychology, hypnotherapy and acupuncture.

Depression

Depression is more than feeling low – it is a persistent condition that affects mood, energy, motivation, sleep and concentration. It can range from mild to severe and may be triggered by life events, physical illness or have no clear cause. Evidence-based treatments include CBT, counselling and clinical psychology, all of which are available at our Wokingham clinic.

Insomnia

Poor sleep affects mood, concentration, immune function and physical health. Insomnia can be caused by anxiety, depression, stress or poor sleep habits, and often becomes a self-reinforcing cycle. Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the gold-standard treatment recommended by NICE. Sleep psychology, hypnotherapy and acupuncture can also be highly effective.

Stress and burnout

Chronic stress and burnout are increasingly common, particularly in working adults. Prolonged stress affects the nervous system, immune function, digestion and cardiovascular health. Burnout – a state of physical and emotional exhaustion – often develops gradually and requires a structured approach to recovery. Our therapists can help you identify triggers, build resilience and restore balance.

Trauma

Trauma can result from a single overwhelming event (such as an accident, assault or bereavement) or from prolonged difficult experiences. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma can cause flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance and emotional numbness. Specialist trauma-informed therapy is available at our clinic, including EMDR, trauma-focused CBT and counselling.

Therapies for mental health

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

CBT is one of the most extensively researched and effective psychological therapies available. It works by identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours that maintain mental health difficulties. CBT is recommended by NICE for anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD and insomnia, among many other conditions. It is typically delivered as a structured course of sessions and provides practical tools that patients can continue to use long after therapy ends.

Counselling

Counselling provides a confidential, non-judgmental space to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences. It is particularly helpful for people dealing with grief, relationship difficulties, life transitions, low self-esteem or general emotional distress. Our counsellors use a range of approaches including person-centred, integrative and psychodynamic therapy, tailoring their approach to your individual needs.

Clinical psychology

Clinical psychologists have doctoral-level training in the assessment and treatment of complex mental health difficulties. They are particularly well suited to working with long-standing or treatment-resistant conditions, those with multiple diagnoses, and people whose mental health is significantly affecting their daily life or functioning. Our clinical psychologist can offer comprehensive assessment and a range of evidence-based therapies.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy uses a state of focused relaxation to help access the subconscious mind and bring about positive change. It is particularly effective for anxiety, phobias, stress, low confidence and sleep problems. During hypnotherapy you remain fully aware and in control at all times. It can be used as a standalone treatment or alongside other psychological therapies.

Sleep psychology

Sleep psychology addresses the psychological and behavioural factors that maintain poor sleep. Using CBT-I and other evidence-based techniques, our sleep psychologist helps patients break the cycle of insomnia, reduce sleep anxiety and establish healthy, sustainable sleep patterns. This is a highly effective treatment that produces lasting results without the need for sleeping medication.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has a well-established role in supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing. Research has shown it can reduce anxiety, improve mood, regulate the stress response and improve sleep quality. It works by stimulating the nervous system, modulating neurotransmitter levels and activating the body's natural relaxation response. Many patients find acupuncture deeply calming and use it alongside psychological therapy for additional support.

Our approach

At Wokingham Therapy Clinic, we believe that mental health is as important as physical health and deserves the same standard of care. Our practitioners work with you as an individual, taking time to understand your history, circumstances and goals before recommending a course of treatment.

We offer flexible appointment times, including early mornings and evenings, to make treatment as accessible as possible. All sessions are held in comfortable, private treatment rooms in our Wokingham town centre clinic. Everything discussed in your sessions is treated in strict confidence.

Where appropriate, our practitioners work collaboratively, with your consent, to ensure you receive joined-up care. For example, a patient receiving counselling may also benefit from acupuncture for sleep or anxiety, and our team can coordinate to support you holistically.

Self-help advice

Alongside professional treatment, the following can support your mental health and wellbeing:

  • Regular physical exercise – even a daily 30-minute walk can significantly reduce anxiety and depression
  • Maintaining a consistent sleep routine – going to bed and waking at the same time each day
  • Reducing alcohol and caffeine, both of which can worsen anxiety and disrupt sleep
  • Practising mindfulness or relaxation techniques to calm the nervous system
  • Maintaining social connections and talking to people you trust
  • Spending time in nature, which has a proven positive effect on mood and stress
  • Limiting news and social media consumption if it contributes to anxiety
  • Eating a balanced, nutrient-rich diet to support brain health and stable mood

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which therapy is right for me?

The right therapy depends on your specific condition, personal preferences and goals. CBT is the first-line recommended treatment for most anxiety disorders and depression. Counselling may be more appropriate if you want to explore your feelings or process life events in an open, unstructured way. Clinical psychology is most suited to complex or long-standing difficulties. If you are unsure, please contact us for a no-obligation conversation and we will help you find the right fit.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on the therapy and the individual. A course of CBT typically involves 6 to 20 sessions. Counselling can be short-term (6 to 12 sessions) or open-ended. Your therapist will discuss an expected treatment plan with you at the outset and review your progress regularly.

Is everything discussed kept confidential?

Yes. All of our therapists adhere to strict professional codes of confidentiality. The only exceptions are situations where there is a risk of serious harm to yourself or others, in which case a therapist may be required to share information with appropriate services. Your therapist will explain their confidentiality policy fully at your first appointment.

Can I self-refer, or do I need a GP referral?

You can self-refer directly to any of our therapists – no GP referral is required. You are welcome to contact us directly to book an appointment or to ask any questions before committing to treatment.
