3. How we treat sports injuries

Acupuncture

Acupuncture speeds recovery from sports injuries by reducing inflammation and swelling, releasing protective muscle spasm, improving blood flow to the injured tissue and stimulating the body's own pain-relieving and healing mechanisms.

Sports massage

Sports massage releases tight and overworked muscles, breaks down adhesions, improves circulation and supports both recovery and injury prevention – before and after training.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy provides the progressive loading and rehabilitation exercise that is essential for recovering from tendon, muscle and ligament injuries and returning safely to sport.

Osteopathy

Osteopathy assesses the whole body's movement and biomechanics, addressing the imbalances and restrictions that contribute to injury and re-injury.

4. Research and evidence

Progressive loading exercise has the strongest evidence base for tendon and soft-tissue sports injuries and is central to physiotherapy rehabilitation. Acupuncture is widely used in sports medicine for pain relief and recovery, with studies supporting its role in reducing musculoskeletal pain and supporting return to activity.

5. Self-help advice

  • For an acute injury, follow the POLICE principle: Protect, Optimal Loading, Ice, Compression, Elevation
  • Avoid complete rest beyond the first day or two – gentle loading aids recovery
  • Warm up properly and build training load gradually
  • Address strength and flexibility imbalances
  • Use appropriate footwear and equipment
  • Return to sport progressively once pain-free and strong
